Ellon Webcam

A snapshot of Aberdeenshire

Looking through the triangular window at Ardgrain, the Ellon Webcam points south towards the market town of Ellon in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

This webcam is optimised for larger monitors. We also have a smaller Ellon webcam page.

Ellon, Aberdeenshire

Bordering the river Ythan, Ellon serves as a dormitory town to Aberdeen and has grown in recent years thanks to the 1970's North Sea oil boom. The Ythan estuary is just visible in the very left of the image, as is the village of Balmedie just beyond.

With a population now approximately 10 000, Ellon has a thriving local community and is popular with commuters wishing to work in Aberdeen but live outwith the city. This popularity has helped to push local house prices ever higher, and Ellon was ranked in the top four most rapidly increasing areas within Scotland in 2006.

Originally just a fording place across the Ythan river, Ellon slowly grew to became the Buchan seat of power in the Middle Ages when Ellon Castle (called Ardgith) was built by the Kennedy family. Robert the Bruce totally destroyed Ellon in 1308 as part of the "Harrying of Buchan" following the defeat of his enemy, the Earl of Buchan. The Kennedies of Ellon Castle also built Ardgrain, and although the original Ellon Castle is now a ruin, Ardgrain itself still serves as a tangible and real link to Ellon's past.
